Adolpho Veloso (born 31 May 1989) is a Brazilian cinematographer. He gained international attention for his work on Train Dreams (2025), for which he won the Critics Choice Award and the Independent Spirit Award, and received nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers as well as the BAFTA and the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.[1][2][3][4][5] Brazilian media described his Academy Award nomination as the first for a Brazilian cinematographer in the category.[6]

Early life and education

Veloso was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and developed an interest in filmmaking from a young age.[7] He studied film at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado.[8]

According to piauí, he was raised by his mother (a lawyer from Minas Gerais), has an older sister, and lost his father when he was three months old; he has also said he received support from relatives in Araguari, Minas Gerais.[9]

Career

Before focusing primarily on film work, Veloso worked extensively in advertising, which he has described as an accelerated environment for technical training and experimentation.[9] He has said he aimed to establish himself professionally in Brazil before pursuing wider international opportunities.[10]

He later became involved in international projects such as the television series Becoming Elizabeth (2022) and the short film American Cancer Story (2024).[11] Since 2019, he has lived in Lisbon, Portugal.[9]

piauí also noted that he shot international advertising campaigns involving actor Harrison Ford and English footballer Jude Bellingham.[9]

Style

His work has been described as minimalist and observational,[12] reflecting influences from American cinematographers like Gordon Willis.[11]

According to piauí, Veloso often emphasizes natural and diegetic lighting (light sources motivated within the scene, such as lamps or fire) as a way to preserve flexibility on set and reduce heavy lighting setups.[9]
