The U.S. Army XM28E4 Riot Control Agent Mask, colloquially known as the "Grasshopper" for its profile,[1][2] was an American experimental gas mask designed for use by tunnel rats deploying tear gas in the Viet Cong tunnels during the Vietnam War.[2] The existing M17 gas mask was too bulky for tunnel warfare and thus the XM28 with its slim design was introduced.[1] Development started in 1966 and after 4 revisions the XM28E4 was introduced in 1968.[1][3] Its internal cheek filters and low profile made it extremely light and compact.[1][2]
