Tribal Area Jampur (Urdu: قبائلی علاقہ جام پور), also officially known as the De-Excluded Area of Jampur, is an administrative subdivision (tehsil) of Rajanpur District in the Punjab province of Pakistan.[2] It is a mountainous region located in the western part of the district, bordering the Sulaiman Mountains.
Geography
The tehsil is characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain. It serves as a natural buffer between the plains of the Indus River and the highlands of Balochistan. The region is home to several historic passes and the **Harrand Fort**, a landmark dating back to the British era. The climate is arid, with extreme temperatures and limited rainfall, making the area dependent on seasonal hill torrents (Rod-Kohi) for water.[3]
Demographics
According to the 2023 Census of Pakistan, the population of the Jampur Tribal Area is 48,512.[1] The population is almost entirely rural and belongs primarily to the Baloch tribes, including the Gorchani and Lashari.
- Languages: The predominant language is Balochi, followed by Saraiki.
- Culture: The region maintains a strong tribal structure with traditional customs.
Administration
Unlike the settled areas of Jampur, the Tribal Area is administered under a special "De-Excluded" status. The headquarters are located at Lalgarh. The administration is overseen by a Political Assistant, and the area is served by the Border Military Police (BMP) instead of the regular Punjab Police.[4]
Economy
The economy is predominantly pastoral and subsistence-based:
- Livestock: Rearing of sheep, goats, and camels is the main source of livelihood.
- Agriculture: Limited farming is practiced in the valleys during the rainy season using torrent-spate irrigation.
- Tourism: The area contains the hill station of **Mari**, which is often referred to as the "Murree of Rajanpur" due to its cooler climate and altitude of over 4,800 feet.[5]
