Stella Velon is an actress, writer, and director who works in both English and French-language films. She made her directorial debut with the short psychological drama The Critic, which she also wrote and in which she played the lead role. The film received multiple nominations and awards, including at the very first All Voices Film Festival organized by Amazon Studios.[1][2]
Velon was nominated for a Webby Award for Best Individual Performance for her role in The Critic.[3]
Education
Velon began her training as an actress in Paris, taking drama classes with Dominique Viriot (at Cours Viriot), and then in Copenhagen with a teacher from the Lee Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, Robert Castle, while continuing her studies up to a bachelor’s degree in economics and business management at Paris Nanterre University. She received an invitation to continue her drama training at HB Studio in New York, where she moved in order to pursue her international acting career.
Career
While continuing her acting training, Velon entered professional modeling and appeared in various campaigns and commercials for Calvin Klein,[4] Oribe, Lacoste, and others.[5] She is a brand ambassador for the jewelry brand Di Modolo.
She also made appearances on television shows and films such as Gossip Girl and Men in Black 3, and starred in independent productions such as Shutterbug, short films and music videos.[5]
Velon co-founded her production company The Punk Floyd Company with former fashion and beauty photography agent Jean Gabriel Kauss. Their inaugural production was the psychological short film The Critic, written, directed, and co-produced by Velon, who also played one of the two lead roles alongside Alan Smyth.[6]
Velon filmed The Critic over the course of two consecutive days in one location in Los Angeles, California.[6][7][8] The film deals with topics ranging from impostor syndrome, mental health, and substance abuse, to artists' and women’s place in Hollywood.[9][6]
For her work on The Critic, she was nominated for Best Director at the 2018 UK Film Review Awards.[10] She was also nominated in the “Best Individual Performance” category at the 2020 Webby Awards for her performance in the film.[3] She also won the award for Best Short Film at the Method Fest Independent Film Festival,[11] one of the top four awards at Amazon first All Voices Film Festival,[11][12] and was the runner-up for the Women in Film Award at the Kinofilm Manchester International Short Film Festival.[13]
