Piano Concerto in One Movement (Price)

The Piano Concerto in One Movement is a piano concerto by American composer Florence Price, composed around 1934.[1] The work was commissioned by the 1934 commencement program at the Chicago Music College, where it was subsequently performed by the Woman's Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, and later by the Chicago Symphony, and the Michigan Works Progress Administration Orchestra in her own lifetime.

Due to World War II, many women's orchestras disbanded, and interest in Price's work declined. After Price's death, the concerto disappeared from record despite efforts by Price's daughter to put her scores in the University of Arkansas archives. The piece was one of many found in her summer home in 2009, which included other major works like her Violin Concerto No.2. The two piano reduction was reconstructed by American composer Trevor Weston. The piece helped inspire a new revival of Price's work in the 21st century.[2][3]

Pianist Lara Downes has performed the piece with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Pops, Detroit Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, and Indianapolis Symphony.[4] Other performers include Michele Cann, and Han Chen, whose recording of the work was nominated for the 2026 Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo.[5]
