Davide Pagliarani FSSPX (born in Rimini, Italy on 25 October 1970) is an Italian traditionalist Catholic priest and current Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX).
Biography
Pagliarani was born in Rimini, Italy.[1] He later entered the SSPX's seminary in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in 1989. Following his studies, he completed military service. Pagliarani was ordained a priest of the SSPX in 27 June 1996 by the former Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay.[2]
Pagliarani ministered in Rimini for seven years, before being transferred for an extension of three years to Singapore. He later served as superior of the District of Italy between 2006 and 2012, becoming rector of the Seminary of Our Lady the Co-Redemptrix (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de la Co-Redentora) in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 2012.[3]
On 11 July 2018, Pagliarani was elected superior general of the Society for a term of twelve years, succeeding Bishop Bernard Fellay.[4]
Views
Pagliarani is known to be an outspoken critic of Pope Francis and the modernization reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Accordingly, he vehemently opposed the Apostolic blessing of parchment marriage granted to a Filipino-American Gay couple in Los Angeles (2013), the telephone calls made by Pope Francis to several Italian gay parents enrolling their children into private Catholic schools (2015), the publication of the Apostolic Exhortation titled Amoris Lætitia (2016), the creation of LGBT ministry for Sex workers at the Basilica of the Virgin of Consolation in Turin, Italy (2017), and the publication of Fiducia Supplicans Populum for blessing both divorced and gay couples (2023).
At the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon region (2019), Pagliarani called for "a day of prayer and reparation" and called the synod "Demonic" and "idolatrous" due to the purported veneration of the mother goddess deity Pachamama.[5]
In October 2020, Pagliarani criticized the Papal encyclical Laudato si' for its reduction of Christian sanctity to environmentalism, ecumenism of the Document on Human Fraternity and its extension to the Papal encyclical Fratelli Tutti.[6]
Pagliarani lamented on the Apostolic Letter titled Traditiones Custodes Episcopi promulgated by Pope Francis in July 2021 restricting the use of the Tridentine Mass. In a sermon delivered at Mass on 18 July 2021, Pagliarani suggested that the pope was a "guardian of the zoo."[7]
