Cheng-Hock Toh CBE FRCP FRCPath is a British haematologist and clinical academic. He is Professor of Haematology at the University of Liverpool and an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In 2022, he was appointed a commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to haematology and medicine.

Early life and education

Toh was born in Ipoh, Malaysia. He moved to the United Kingdom to complete his A-levels at Wellington School in Somerset (1978–1980). He studied medicine at the University of Sheffield, graduating with an MBChB (Honours) in 1985 and later obtaining an MD in 1993.

Career

In 1995, Toh was appointed senior lecturer and honorary consultant in haematology at the University of Liverpool and its affiliated teaching hospitals. He was promoted to reader in 2001 and professor in 2005.[1] Toh established the Liverpool Roald Dahl Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre in 2001 and served as its director until 2018.[1]

In addition to his institutional role, Toh has held several senior national leadership positions. He served as president of the British Society for Haematology from 2018 to 2020.[2] He was academic vice-president of the Royal College of Physicians from 2018 to 2021.[3] He served as national haematology lead for the National Institute for Health and Care Research from 2015 to 2020.[4] In 2020, he was appointed chair of the National Blood Transfusion Committee, with responsibility for oversight of transfusion practice across hospitals in England.[5]

Research

Toh’s research focuses on the mechanisms of immunothrombosis, particularly the pathological crosstalk between coagulation and inflammation.[6] His work has contributed to the understanding of conditions including sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).[7] He contributed to the development and validation of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) scoring system for the diagnosis of DIC, which is widely used in critical care settings. His research group has also identified circulating histones as key mediators of organ failure and mortality in sepsis and trauma.[8] In addition to his academic work, he has been involved in translational research and commercialisation, founding spin-out companies including Sepsis Limited and Frequasense to develop point-of-care diagnostic tests for sepsis.[9]
