Abdul Awal Mintoo

Abdul Awal Mintoo (born 22 February 1949) is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) election held on 12 February 2026 as a candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Mintoo was born on 22 February 1949 in Dagonbhuiyan, Feni District, then part of East Bengal under the Dominion of Pakistan. He pursued maritime education at the Bangladesh Marine Academy and later attended the State University of New York Maritime College, where he received higher education in maritime and related disciplines. His academic background laid the foundation for his subsequent engagement in shipping, trade and industrial entrepreneurship.

Mintoo established himself as a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s private sector. Over the decades, he has served as chairman or managing director of a number of industrial and commercial enterprises, contributing to the development of shipping, banking, manufacturing and trade sectors in the country.

He was elected President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the apex trade body of Bangladesh, where he represented the interests of the business community and played a role in policy dialogue between the government and private sector stakeholders. He has also been associated with various chambers, boards and financial institutions, including leadership positions in the banking sector.

Throughout his business career, Mintoo has been vocal on issues concerning economic reform, industrial growth, financial sector governance and private sector development in Bangladesh.

Mintoo is a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), one of the major political parties in Bangladesh. He has served as Vice Chairman of the party and has been involved in national political activities and policy advocacy.

In the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election held on 12 February 2026, he was elected as a Member of Parliament representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. His election marked a significant milestone in his political career, transitioning from party leadership and advisory roles to legislative office.

Mintoo is married to Nasreen Fatema Awal. He has three children, including Tabith Awal, who is also active in business and politics.

Mintoo was born in a village named Aleyarpur in Feni District. He studied science at Feni Government Pilot High School in Feni where he earned his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 1964. He graduated from Comilla Victoria College in 1966 with a Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC). In 1968, he obtained a diploma in nautical science from Mercantile Marine Academy in Chittagong, then known as Pakistan Marine Academy. He moved to the United States to pursue his studies and in 1973 graduated with a BSc in marine transportation science from the State University of New York Maritime College, following it up with a master's degree in transportation management and advance chartering problems and arbitration.^[1]

Mintoo has been Director of National Bank Limited and General Insurance, the largest private general insurance company in the Bangladesh. He is chairman of the marketing and sole distribution of Johnson & Johnson Products in Bangladesh.^[1]

Within the Bangladeshi manufacturing sector, Mintoo has been director of the Chittagong Cement Clinker Grinding Co. Ltd. (Heidelberg Cement) and an advisor to Dulamia Cotton Spinning Mills Ltd. He is also active in agricultural-based industries, having served as Chairman of OP and Hybrid Vegetable seeds production, processing and research and has also been active in the following organisations:^[1]

He has also been active in hotel groups in Bangladesh and has been a member of the Board of Governors, Academy for Planning and Development, Ministry of Planning, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Bangladesh Olympic Association.^[1] He is a member of the National Bank Foundation and founded several colleges in Bangladesh including Iqbal Memorial College, Bodarernessa High School and Alhaj Safiullah High School.^[1] He is also a member of the Board of Governors, at Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and at the Bangladesh Institute of Management.^[1]

He was elected president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry in 2003.^[2]
